There is so much beauty to see in the English countryside and the Lake District is not a spot to be missed. I can’t believe I hadn’t been sooner and I’m glad a stay at The Wild Boar Inn was my welcome into the Lakes, because this place was just spectacular! It was one of the most wholesome trips I’ve done in a while and what made it even better is that they are dog-friendly!
As you step in, you’re welcomed by the crackling fireplace and friendly staff offering a complimentary glass of brandy as you check in—a winning combo if you ask me. Cosy seating is dotted around making it perfect for enjoying an evening tipple and a beautiful meal made from local produce. All the decor and furnishings are rustic, yet incredibly warm and inviting. Blankets draped on the back of leather armchairs. Wooden beams and photo frames added to the rustic charm. The lounge and bar was a perfect place to relax in the evenings. Sinking into the armchairs next to the fireplace with a fleet of their local beer tastings was an ideal way to end a busy day of exploring. In the morning, the large windows lined with vibrant daffodils let the sun pour in. A perfectly relaxing way to start the morning.
The Rooms
The rooms are simple and a little bit old-school but in a charming sort of way. Our room had a red velvet bed frame which added a touch of regality. There was enough space for two people and two small dogs to comfortably enjoy. I liked the little window nook which allowed for a peaceful moment to look at the surrounding nature and we were lucky enough to have a bottle of bubbles in our room on arrival.
The only issue with the room for me is that they weren’t very soundproof. You could hear the chatter of other guests and the creaking of floorboards from the hall, sometimes there’d be kitchen clanging, plus we were on the roadside, so often you’d hear cars zipping down. It wasn’t a huge issue but make sure to pack the earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.
The Food
The food here was fantastic. The package we booked meant breakfast was included and I’m so glad it was. There’s something about a countryside gastro pub offering beautiful British produce that brings me the most joy. In the mornings, you can enjoy dishes like sourdough topped with wild mushrooms and hollandaise and grilled peach, mascarpone and pistachio french toast for breakfast.
For dinner, beautifully cooked lamb or steak – they’re a grill house, so definitely try the meat. The food was such a highlight for us and one of the things that would draw us back here. They also offer something called an alternative afternoon tea. Out go the ‘delicate finger sandwiches’ and in come delicious pigs in blankets, mini fish & chips and beef sliders! I highly recommend eating here if you’re staying here.
The Brewhouse
Experience the art of traditional brewing firsthand, as the inn crafts their own range of signature ales. The brewhouse brings an added sense of authenticity and warmth to the inn, where you can savour a fresh pint brewed just steps away. From the dry body of their Mad Pig Ale to the zesty Blonde Boar, make sure to try their tasting pallet for a true taste of English tradition.
The Location
The Wild Boar Inn is just an 8-minute drive from Windermere town and lake front. This means you’re further out enough to enjoy tranquility of the national park but close enough that everything you need is within close reach. This means you have access to delicious restaurants, vibrant bars and beautiful hiking trails all nearby.
Is the Wild Boar Inn a good place to stay in the Lake District?
I loved our stay, although it’s super important to note that I booked this with a travel deal through Travelzoo, making the room £100 per night. I’ve seen these rooms can cost upwards of £250 per night… plus if you bring your dog, expect to pay a £30 supplement. That being said, for what I paid, I was extremely happy with our stay. So, if you can find a deal, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
